Brand fill is a term describing the overwhelming amount of branded merch that ends up in the garbage. It's estimated that over 92 million tons of textile waste are generated globally each year. Annually within the U.S., approximately 17 million tons of textile waste are produced, equating to roughly 81 pounds (37 kg) per person per year.
Most branded merchandise is made from unsustainable material leading to piles and piles of textiles that never break down. Why is that? Because most of these textiles are made with plastics.
As consumption is a big part of our culture, we need to embrace buying products that won’t stick around forever. Now…how do we do that? And... how can we minimize plastic in branded merch programs also? Well, minimizing plastic in branded merchandise is possible - it involves thoughtful design, material selection, production processes, and consumer engagement.
Here are several strategies to reduce virgin plastic usage effectively:
1. Material Selection and Innovative Materials
Opt for products made from natural fibers (organic cotton, hemp, wool, and linen), biodegradable alternatives (cork, bamboo, and natural rubber), and recycled materials (recycled polyester or ocean plastics). Also, consider products made from new lab-grown materials such as leather made from mushrooms, apples, and banana peels.
2. Product Design
Select merchandise that is durable and long-lasting, multi-functional or versatile, and easily repaired or upgraded. These features will reduce the need for frequent replacements, will serve multiple purposes, and extend the product’s lifespan while reducing waste.
3. Sustainable Printing and Embellishments
Choose products that use eco-friendly inks that are water-based or biodegradable for printing on textiles and other merchandise. Additionally, avoid plastic coatings or laminations that make products harder to recycle.
Here are some examples using specific merchandise we have at EcoBranders:
Apparel:
- Use organic or recycled fabrics, eliminate plastic tags, and package items with recycled paper.
Accessories:
- Opt for cork, bamboo, non-virgin wood, or fabric alternatives instead of plastic.
Office Supplies:
- Choose recycled paper notebooks, bamboo pens, and glass or stainless steel water bottles.
By implementing these strategies, brands can significantly reduce the plastic content in their merchandise, contributing to environmental sustainability and meeting the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products.
